Letters to the Editor

Why are you so happy when the sun comes out in springtime? Sunshine allows you to make endorphins, your natural antidepressant. Why do you get sick less in the summer than in the winter? Sunshine on your skin makes vitamin D which you later convert into a potent hormone that supports your immune system.

Chief Illiniwek is a memory —and should remain one for those who support him, however it is time for the University of Illinois to move on and to move forward. There is an undeniable rift on this campus that will not go away overnight. The Unity resolution put forth by the Illinois Student Senate that makes no claims that it will do so.

In response to the March 10 article on women in Engineering titled “A Strong Support System”, I would like to begin by saying that I was one of the female engineers who took the survey asking if I felt that I had been treated differently in the college because of my gender.

The March 9 publication of the salary guide was a great idea. However, I was miffed to see that my salary was listed as more than twice the amount I was actually paid.

Although there are a plethora of dining and nightlife opportunities here on campus, I feel that your paper is neglecting to inform the student population of the possibilities in downtown Champaign. The Daily Illini in general doesn’t seem to want students to enjoy themselves off campus. I feel that this is a disservice to all the readers of The Daily Illini who look to you to provide them not only with their news but also with their inspiration for Friday night.

Fans should bring energy, support come Sunday morning
With Unofficial, considered the biggest party weekend of the year, coming this weekend, I am writing an appeal to make sure Illini Nation does not forget about a critical game this Sunday. Sunday marks the final basketball game of the regular season.

Islam Awareness Week addresses ignorance, prejudice
There are an estimated six million Muslims in the United States and 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. On this campus alone, there are more than 700 undergraduate Muslim students. The Muslim Students Association (MSA), a registered student organization, is a means by which Muslim students increase their faith in a college environment as well a tool by which the larger student body, as well as faculty and staff, can learn about Islam.

Everyone at some point has been stuck driving around the block for a third time with just minutes before the dreaded a.m. exam starts, searching desperately for a parking spot. After locating a space three blocks away, you rush to class forgetting to pay the meter and return an hour later to find a ticket on your window, or even worse an ugly hunk of metal strapped to your front tire. An alternative solution should be found to improve parking problems.

I am writing to share my disgust at the recent actions taken by members of the Illinois Student Senate against Vice Chancellor Renee Romano and Associate Vice Chancellor Anna Gonzalez. We are currently in a time of unprecedented turmoil at the University of Illinois, with the recent removal of our president, chancellor and the departure of our provost.

In this small community of Champaign-Urbana, there are already six long term care facilities, but very rarely can I find news dealing with aging. There has been too little coverage, and even a negative portrayal in media on aging.

After two and a half years on campus and multiple parking tickets reminding me so, I have reached the point where I can no longer stand the parking available on our campus.

Rising costs at the University of Illinois are making a quality education unattainable for many prospective and current students.

In 2009, we had a goal to begin an on-campus student farm that would supply fresh, locally-grown vegetables and fruits to the campus residence halls and University dining services as part of the effort to make our campus more sustainable. This was not a new idea but one that a number of different groups on campus had previously tried to start, but had not been successful. In May of 2009, we began harvesting and delivering salad greens to the University Dining Services, and by the end of 2009, we had delivered nearly 19,000 pounds of vegetables and fruits and over 4,000 ounces of fresh herbs.

I was quite shocked to find that the editorial board of the Daily Illini had endorsed David Wall for student trustee. Having seen Mr. Wall speak before the Graduate Employees Organization, I was rather unimpressed with him. At the same meeting, Dan Weber presented himself as engaging and thoughtful, forgoing note cards and talking points. Mr. Weber expressed a strong interest in protecting all students, especially those that are often marginalized by dominant institutions.

In an effort to become a more informed voter, I attended the last two student trustee debates. One was hosted on Tuesday by the Illinois Student Senate and one was held on Thursday by the Graduate Employees Organization. At these events, all four candidates expressed their platforms and answered a wide range of questions.

It has been quite a year. First semester started amid allegations of corruption permeating the highest levels of our university administration. Our campus was attacked by an onslaught of gnats. And finally, members of the Graduate Employees’ Organization fought to secure a fair contract. There is still room for improvement. Our institution is threatened by a financial crisis as a result of mismanagement at the upper levels of the statehouse.

I strongly support the “student sustainability fee” increase from $5 to $14 per semester. These are difficult economic times to request a fee increase; however, this fee forms an important foundation that provides our student body with a strong voice for initiating and incentivizing our campus administration to aggressively pursue topics of interest to many of our students. As a retired faculty member, I have no vested interest in the fee. I do, however, care a great deal about our university and the future of our students.

Following the devastating crash of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili during a training run on Feb. 12, officials lowered the starting spot for the men’s luge competition to significantly reduce the speed competitors will face. I have the greatest sympathies for those close to Kumaritashvili, but changing the event is not the answer to this problem.

The Department of Dance strongly supports the pending ballot referendum that would raise the Sustainable Campus Environment (“green”) Fee from $5 to $14 per semester. This fee, allocated by the Student Sustainability Committee (SSC), has been instrumental in moving the campus administration forward in this area.

Columnist should consider merit of carrier, not gun.
Tuesday’s Opinions section featured an article on concealed carry. Many people are under the impression that the adoption of concealed carry laws would make guns accessible to anyone. This is far from the truth.
