Board of Trustees approves 2008 budget, energy policy for University
11:01 PM 11/14/2007 — The University Board of Trustees passed the budget for the 2008 fiscal year during its meeting in Springfield, Tuesday.
The budget, projected at $3.9 billion, is a 6.1 percent increase from the fiscal year 2007 budget.
Only Trustee Kenneth Schmidt voted against the bill, saying the budget did not address the needed money for the university's medical program.

The group of 22 demonstrators travelled from Chicago to get the board's attention in hopes of renewing its contract at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus.

Illinois Student Senate rejects funding regional LGBT meeting
11:02 PM 11/14/2007 — The Illinois Student Senate spent a majority of Wednesday night's meeting discussing an appropriation that would sponsor the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference by giving it $500.
After several failed attempts to negate the resolution or re-send it to the appropriations committee, the measure was defeated by an 13-11 vote.

Man in Atlantic City casino standoff peacefully surrenders to police
12:03 AM 11/15/2007 — ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - A masked man who claimed he was armed and had planted four bombs in a casino held police at bay from a shuttle bus for nearly six hours, demanding $3 million before surrendering peacefully early Wednesday, police said.
During the standoff, the man blamed the Showboat Casino-Hotel for the suicide of his brother, who he said was a former employee who developed a gambling problem, according to a person with knowledge of the standoff who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized by law enforcement to release the information.

Federal judge blocks moment of silence in Chicagoland school district
11:04 PM 11/14/2007 — CHICAGO - A federal judge on Wednesday issued a preliminary injunction blocking a suburban Chicago school district from enforcing a new state law requiring a moment of silence, calling the statute "likely unconstitutional" and vague.
Judge Robert W. Gettleman asked the parties in the case to return to federal court on Thursday when he said he would consider making the injunction statewide.

Negotiators abandon talks about mass-transit funding
11:05 PM 11/14/2007 — CHICAGO - Two key negotiators walked out on a Wednesday meeting aimed at resolving a bitter legislative stalemate over mass-transit funding and casino expansion that House Speaker Michael Madigan said devolved into "nonproductive shouting."
Gov. Rod Blagojevich called the meeting with top lawmakers and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley to try to break a logjam over transit funding, casino expansion and a massive statewide construction program - projects that all have stalled because of contentious relations among lawmakers during a protracted legislative session.

11:06 PM 11/14/2007 — Champaign A 21-year-old woman reported assault at the 100 block of Fourth Street, Monday night. According to a police report, the victim reported that a 25-year-old man pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her. The victim was not harmed. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.

Odds and ends: Warden wants satellite TV so inmates can watch NFL
8:13 PM 11/14/2007 — ATLANTA - The warden of the Clayton County Correctional Institution wants permission to spend money for a "management tool" - satellite TV to keep his 226 inmates occupied watching football. Warden Frank Taylor is asking the Clayton County Commission to let him sign up for direct-broadcast satellite service for less than $100 a month.
