Friendliness not a major at ISU

Indiana Statesman, Indiana State University, IN

his is my fifth semester at Indiana State University, and while I have met some nice people here, the majority of people I have come into contact with are rude and self-absorbed.

I do not know how many times I have tried to make small talk with someone on an elevator, at the library, Stalker Hall, etc.

Editorial: Search committee gets more time; not the right student

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

Jeff Cooley will retire in December, but the search committee to replace him has just received approval from President Bill Perry to have a successor in place by April 1. The extension will require an interim to be named to the position, but the decision should help provide stronger candidates for the April hiring.

JUST MY THOUGHTS

o my Republican associates, I have tried my best to understand Gov. Sarah Palin.

When I first heard about Senator John McCain's choice in a running mate, I was taken aback by his audacity to make such a controversial pick.

I did not think he made the pick arbitrarily, so I began to do research.

Last week I was asked to participate in a peaceful vigil outside the Planned Parenthood clinic in Champaign. A girl I knew came up to me during breakfast with a big binder, opened it up and showed me some signs she had ready for the vigil that said "Pray To End Abortion," in bold black letters.

Column: Ooh that smell, can't you smell that smell?

There's a distinct stench that has hung over the McCain campaign for quite some time now; that familiar reek of something being not quite right, that something is not quite what it seems. The stench hangs over much of what he says and does. It tinges his speeches and can be ephemerally sensed around the edges of his campaign maneuvers.

"It's an attack ad. It attacks me personally. It's nasty. It's mean-spirited. Frankly, it tells you more about Sen. McCain than it does about me that he would run an ad like that."

No, that quote doesn't come from Barack Obama or one of his campaign's supporters, unless Mitt Romney has something he wants to share with the entire class.

Column: Liberals are responsible

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

Barack Obama and the Democrats are fond of placing blame for the mortgage crisis we are facing on the economic policies of the Bush administration. However, concerning the root of this problem, the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, I will defer to former President Bill Clinton who said last week, "I think the responsibility the Democrats have may rest more in resisting the efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was President to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Indiana Statesman, Indiana State University, IN

Many times when faced with something new or unfamiliar we are mostly critical and judgmental based on the little or no information we possess.

Why are we so prideful and condemning despite our awareness of how little we know?

Most of us (and all of us should) acknowledge that we are not the slightest ounce near to being perfect, yet when we observe or experience something that is beyond our understanding and rationale, we quickly deem it strange, bizarre or awkward.
